Acne can somtimes be a sign that things aren't going right with your body. It can be an advanced warning signal that there could be pituitary gland or hormone issues that you need to let your doctor know about. A sign of this could be if your acne doesn't clear up right away after applying treatment that had always worked in the past. Or if you suddenly have a serious outbreak after being acne free for several years.  Another thing to watch for is if your acne worsens during menstruation or pregnency. If any of these skin conditions occur you need to see your doctor right away.  They'll probably want to give you a physical examination just to make certain that everything is alright.

Adult women with acne also may have experienced mild breakouts in their 20s or even 30s for no apparent reason. These types of chemical changes may be due to a woman's monthly menstruation cycle and can even generate acne that follows the woman's cycle changes. The more hormonal activity that occurs,  the more of an acne problem she will have. As the hormone levels become lower,  the acne should too or it may even completely disappear. In these cases, most over the counter acne medicines, such as lotions and creams,  won't be as effective and you'll need to visit your dermatologist and request a prescription for an acne medication.

One of the most simple methods of controlling acne in women is to place them on birth control pills. That's correct.  Your dermatologist may actually recommend the use of oral contraceptives in order to regulate your hormone levels and control your acne. They will likely suggest a low dose. Unless this person is attempting to get pregnant at that time,  this is actually a very good solution for treating cases of mild to moderate acne. Many women don't like to use the pill because of the mild side effects that come with its use. There are other remedies that dermatologists may be able to offer, but adult women with acne will have to decide what they believe is best for them.
