There are several acne myths floating around that are nothing but "old wives tales". It's hard enough being a teenager
and trying to figure out what you should do about your acne, but then you hear horror stories
about what caused it and home remedies to treat it that don't make any sense to you. You figure that if people
are telling you these things then they must be true. Am I Right? Wrong.

Someone needs to come forward and tell the facts behind these myths. I'm sure heard that chocolate and fatty foods
will cause acne. This is simply not true. Studies have shown that the one thing in your diet that can cause an acne
breakout is iodized salt. Enjoy foods you love to eat, but in moderation. If you believe that something you're eating a lot
of is affecting your acne then what you are likely seeing is a food allergy. Make an appointment with your health care
provider right away.
Another acne myth is that only teenagers get acne. This isn't true either. 20% of all infants have episodes of acne. 5%
of women over 40 still deal with acne breakouts and will until menopause begins. At the same age only 1% of men still have
some acne problems.
A lot of you may have heard that poor hygiene causes acne. No, it doesn't. Moat people with acne actually wash their
faces too much trying to get rid of their blemishes. This really isn't good for you as it can irritate the acne and possibly
make it uncomfortable. Acne is caused by excess body oils that clog the pores. No amount of washing your face will
change that. Some other acne sufferers think that lying in the sun will help their skin condition by drying it out,
therefore removing the oils. Unfortunately, the sun will do nothing for your skin that will help to prevent or treat your acne.
It is important that If you are taking antibiotic medication to help clear up your acne, do not stop taking the medication once the acne is
gone. Many people think that is alright to stop taking the medicine once the blemishes have cleared up. This is totally incorrect.
You should never quit taking any medicationunless your doctor specifically tells you to do so. Stopping the meds
before they've had ample time to work thoroughly could easily cause your acne to come right back.
Other strange acne myths that people still believe include that sex causes acne. This isn't true at all. Others say
that stress causes acne? This too is incorrect. Though stress has been shown to worsen acne conditions, it is not
the cause of it. This myth isn't as silly as saying to "leave it alone and it'll go away". Although, if you suffer
from acne you really should not to touch it or pick at it, but you shouldn't ignore it either. There are
definitely certain remedies that can help to improve your acne, though if you've heard there is a cure, sorry but
that happens to be another acne myth.
